Leaving a Legacy for America with your Will or Living Trust
One of the most meaningful tasks a person will undertake during their lifetime is the creation of their will. A person’s last will and testament is an abbreviated version of their life‘s story.
It details our most interesting possessions, acknowledges those we love most, and it can also make a final statement about the values we hold dearest. In his will, George Washington bequeathed swords to several of his nephews with “…an injunction not to ensheath them for the purpose of shedding blood, except it be for self defense, or in defense of their Country & its rights; and in the latter case, to keep them unsheathed, and prefer falling with them in their hands, to the relinquishment thereof.” With these words, Washington used his will to not only convey personal property, but he also made clear his feelings about our nation’s hard-won freedom.
With this in mind, what will your last will and testament say about you? Is it reflective of your love for America, or a desire to see future generations of Americans inherit a country that resembles the nation our Founding Fathers intended? Many Heritage Legacy Society members –those members who have remembered Heritage in their estate plans-have included provisions for Heritage because they recognize that a gift to Heritage is a gift to keep America strong, free, and prosperous. Heritage, more than any other organization of its kind, has the experience, expertise, and reputation to get things done in Washington. This means that ultimately, with your help, we have the ability to shape America’s future.
Bequests to Heritage can be expressed as a dollar amount, a percentage of all or part of your estate, or even as a tangible piece of property. You may also name Heritage a “contingent” beneficiary in the event that someone else named in your will is no longer living. Many members choose to express their commitment as a percentage of their estate so that as the value of their estate rises or falls, their final gift will adjust itself accordingly.
Over the years, we have received many wonderful gifts ranging from very modest to generously humbling. Each and every one of these gifts is a testament to our members’ love of country, and together, their collective strength serves as a bedrock for future conservative victories.
